Frequently asked questions about OpenSpace

Frequently asked questions about OpenSpace

Which cameras work, where is the data stored, how many people can view it, and what does it cost? These are the questions teams ask before bringing OpenSpace onto site. They are grouped by topic so you can find answers quickly.

Before trying a new tool on site, most project teams share the same worries: is it hard to use, is it safe, could the data be lost, and will it connect to the software we already use?

This page groups the most common questions about OpenSpace into five topics: overview, devices, data and security, using the tool, and integrations and getting started. Each answer is short, with a link to a deeper article if you want to read more.

What is OpenSpace and how does it differ from other 3D capture tools?

What is OpenSpace?

OpenSpace is the fastest and easiest way to create a visual record of your construction site, like Google Street View made just for construction. The key difference is that it needs no dedicated labor or infrastructure: you wear a 360° camera when you want to capture (for example during a routine inspection or walkthrough), press “start” in the app and let the software do the work. For the full introduction, read AI-enhanced 360° camera monitoring for construction sites.

How is OpenSpace different from other 3D capture tools?

Other 3D capture tools usually need specialized setup, dedicated capture time or an experienced operator. With OpenSpace you simply mount a 360° camera on top of your hard hat and move around normally; AI algorithms do the rest.

If I use OpenSpace, who does the capturing?

The people already on your site. They know the site best and are there every day, so they capture the most data, and most customers use their own staff. OpenSpace also notes that information about a site is fairly sensitive if the task is handed to a third party.

How much does OpenSpace cost?

OpenSpace quotes are tailored to the size of your project. Please contact OneCAD for advice.

Cameras and devices: which ones work, and are they safe?

Which cameras work with OpenSpace?

Compatible cameras include the Garmin VIRB 360, Insta360 One X, Insta360 One R and Ricoh Theta Z1 in all capture modes (video and photo); Ricoh 360 cameras are supported in photo mode.

Where can I download the OpenSpace app?

Download it directly from the App Store for iPhone and from Google Play for Android.

Is it safe to mount the camera on a hard hat?

OpenSpace states that the magnetic force of the camera mount has been accepted by safety managers. You can also walk the site with the 360° camera on a monopod if you prefer, but the hard hat is the recommended method because it keeps your hands free for notes and work.

The full equipment checklist is in Capture construction site photos with OpenSpace.

Data and security: where is it stored, and who can see it?

Where is the data stored, and how do I know it is secure?

Data is stored on AWS. OpenSpace says it takes data security very seriously and complies with the European GDPR. All customer data is encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest with industry-standard 256-bit AES.

How much data can I capture?

As much as you want: there is no limit on the number of walks or the number of images captured. Data is kept for up to 10 years with a single payment plan, as described in Solution for storing construction site images over time.

How many people can be invited to view the project?

The number of participants is unlimited. You can add as many people as you like to the project, from any organization you choose.

Using OpenSpace: project setup, notes and manual photos

How do I set up a project?

After you log in, upload the floor plans for each level. If you use BIM, you can also upload the model to track progress alongside it.

Can I take photos with my phone and upload them to OpenSpace?

Yes. While you walk you can take photos and write notes, and OpenSpace automatically pins them to where the note was made. This feature is called Field Notes. You can also take phone photos at any time and pin them manually to the floor plan.

Can I add 360° photos taken manually?

Yes. The core of OpenSpace is walking with a 360° camera to record video and map the floor plans, but you can also take 360° photos (and phone photos) and attach them directly to a floor plan. This is a good approach when you need several high-resolution images on site.

Real examples of how Field Notes and regular capture are used on projects: CEC improves contractor communication with OpenSpace and Kitchell improves hospital project delivery with OpenSpace.

Integrations and getting started: connecting software, trying it, contacting us

Which software does OpenSpace integrate with?

OpenSpace integrates with Procore and BIM 360, including single sign-on, data export, and integration with RFIs and observation workflows. It is also linked to Autodesk Construction Cloud: you can sign in with your ACC account and link a Field Note to an RFI or Issue in Autodesk Build (now Forma Build). The linking feature requires licenses for both Autodesk Build and OpenSpace.

How do I get access to OpenSpace, and is there a trial?

Contact OneCAD and we will arrange access for you. If you would like to try it first, start with OpenSpace Basic: it is completely free, and you can sign in and explore on your own.

Who do I contact for advice and a quote?

OneCAD is the officially authorized OpenSpace partner in Vietnam. You can send us your details, call +84 919 019 964 or sign up for a project digitization pilot.
